Skiing and Boarding Facts with Lily

Hi St. Mary’s, this is your Vice President, Lily Laurencio, with some skiing and snowboarding facts.
Did you know...
- Wrist injuries make up over a quarter of all snowboarding injuries.
- Historians believe the first skis were used in Norway as a way of transportation while hunting.
- On a snowboard your stance can be regular or goofy. Having your left foot forward is regular and right foot forward is goofy.
- The term for being “goofy” originates from the Mickey Mouse in Hawaii video. When they are surfing, Goofy is the only one with his right foot in front, so surfers referred to having your right foot forward as goofy.
- The first snowboard came from putting two skis together and surfing or skateboarding.
- The most popular snowboard brand is Burton.
- The most popular skiing brands are Spyder and North Face.
-  The four types of skiing are alpine, cross-country, freestyle, and biathon.
-  Snowboarding was brought to the United States in 1960-70, but became a Winter Olympic sport in 1998
